Custer South Dakota & Custer County: Area History

by ponderosa pines, Custer was named for General George Armstrong Custer.

Custer was named for General George Armstrong
Custer and began as a camp of the Seventh Cavalry.
By the spring of 1876, Custer was a roaring boom
camp until the rumor of a gold strike in Deadwood
Gulch made it a bust.

After that, Custer began to build again:
schools, churches, courts and more. Today, the "Golden Valley" is as beautiful as the day General Custer first saw it - a well-built, prosperous
town that's the gem of the valley.
  
Custer, the seat of Custer County, is the
oldest town in the Black Hills. It's situated
among picturesque granite outcroppings and
flanked on all sides by ponderosa pines.
   
Surrounded by 1.2 million acres of the Black
Hills National Forest, residents here have |
